Caregiving and the importance of water

As a caregiver it is important to know that you and your patient needs to drink as much water as possible. It will make things easier for both of you It will help prevent a lot of unnecessary problems. Below you will find some benefits of water that will help in everyday life. Yes your patient will use the bathroom more but it will give them better overall health, and at the same time if you drink water along with them it will also help you.>

Your body needs water everyday to flush out the kidneys.Water is also the best lubricating laxative and prevents constipation which many elderly people suffer from.
Water prevents clogging of arteries in the heart and the brain and as such prevents heart attacks and strokes. It also dilutes the blood and prevents it from clotting during circulation

Water gives us power and electrical energy for all brain functions, particularly thinking. and is directly needed for the production of all hormones made by the brain, including melatonin. It prevents the loss of memory as we age. Water is also essential for the body’s cooling (sweat) and heating (electrical) systems

Water increases efficiency at work; it expands your attention span, it also helps prevents attention deficit disorder in children and adults.
Water normalizes the blood-manufacturing systems in the bone marrow—it helps with leukemia and lymphoma.

Water is the main lubricant in the joint spaces and prevents arthritis and back pain. It also prevents fatigue, stress, anxiety, depression and restores normal sleep rhythms.



Water is absolutely vital for making the immune system more efficient in different regions to fight infections and cancer cells where they are formed. The human body has no water storage to draw on during dehydration. This is why you must drink regularly throughout the day.

Dehydration prevents sex hormone production—one of the primary causes of impotence and loss of libido. Dehydration also causes deposits of toxic sediments in the tissue spaces, fat stores, joints, kidneys, liver, brain, and skin. Water will clear these deposits

Drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily.
If you weigh 140 lbs, you need to drink 70 ounces of water daily.

Do not substitute water with caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, these are diuretics and will dehydrate you.
Every 6 ozs of caffeine or alcohol requires an additional 12 ozs of water to rehydrate you.

So drink your water daily for maximum health.

Common Signs of Caregiver Stress

Caregiving or taking care of an infirmed elderly loved one is not easy. Caregiving is a time consuming act and the caregiver tends to get stressed even without realizing it. It is important to look for signs of caregiver stress so that you can take appropriate steps to relieve the stress before it starts creating havoc in your life.

Common Signs of Caregiver Stress:

• Withdrawal is common sign of stress. You know that you have withdrawn from friends and family if you stop taking part in things you used to enjoy before. If you feel that you are withdrawing and getting isolated, ask for help from a friend or family member so that you can go out and relax a bit.
• Sleeping problems can manifest themselves as not being able to sleep or sleeping too much. Whenever your loved one is taking a nap, you should also stop everything that you are doing and take a short nap. This will rejuvenate you and you will be able to tackle all your tasks with more energy.
• Exhaustion is a common sign of caregiver stress. Between taking care of your loved one, doing the cooking and cleaning, and running errands, it is natural to get exhausted. And more so if you are doing this day in and day out. It is best to make a to-do list for the day and stick to it rather than trying to do any and everything that you can think of. Of course, do not forget to stop and take rest in between tasks.
• Weight gain or weight loss is quite common in people who are taking care of an elderly person. The weight gain usually occurs due to emotional overeating while the weight loss is because the caregiver is so exhausted that he or she does not have the appetite.
